CHURCH HISTORIAN

In the days of Saint Liselle, first Priestess of the Life-Giver, a demon in the guise of a man rose from the shadowy spaces not touched by the Light.

His eyes burned with malice, and his feet left a trail of rot in their wake.  He coveted the powers of the goddess, her adulation among her Beloved, and so devised a plan to steal what was rightfully hers.

He cloaked himself in the trickery of the arcane, luring the benevolent Life-Giver into a trap.  Saint Liselle bore witness to his treachery, saw his veins ablaze with the stolen powers of the goddess.  Our Saint wept, but too great was the power of this demon  to be overcome by her alone.

The other gods, the Time-Keeper, the Silver Queen, and the Path-Weaver, swiftly descended and wrought their judgment upon the man.  When his foul flesh was reduced to cinder and he was no more, Saint Liselle rejoiced as the Life-Giver rose again to her rightful place among her pantheon.  Then, Saint Liselle watched the gods ascend and her heart was whole.

The demon’s trickery had not yet ended, however.  The divine Light that shone from the temples began to fade, the voices of the gods no longer heard by the faithful.  Saint Liselle sought out the three founding Acolytes, and as she addressed a flock of the devout in the holy city of Arindale she found that the demon still lived and was amongst their number.

Saint Liselle rose up in a righteous fury, and for the second time the man was cast out and reduced to ash.  Despite this show of faith, the voices of the gods remained silent to all.  Offerings remained unanswered, miracles unperformed.

Saint Liselle and the three Acolytes rallied the devout, and began to seek penance from the gods.  They rejoiced in their shared faith, and thus the four temples became the Convalescent Church of Light.  It is decreed that those who seek to alter the world the gods have given us through arcane means shall be sought out and met with the punishment befitting their crimes.

So it is written, and so we shall one day end this Great Silence that has plagued the land.
