Trailer #7: The Mountain

[EXT. A SNOWY MOUNTAINSIDE.  Suddenly, we hear the sound of the Eagle screeching, as if underwater.  With a flash, Brass Eagle Tavern appears on the distant mountain peak.  Silhouettes within the illuminated windows pick themselves up and dust themselves off.]

KEEPER

Everyone alive?  Fingers, toes, major organs intact?

ELLIS

I-I’m fine.

AMARA

Same here.  But the glasses—not so much.

KEEPER

Great.  Well.  Watch your step, then.  Broom and dustpan are behind the bar, Amara.

AMARA

Why do I have to clean it up?

KEEPER

You dropped them.  Also–you owe me.

AMARA

Owe you what?!

KEEPER

Money for the glasses.  We’ll square up eventually.

AMARA

…Fine.  Ugh.

ELLIS, curious

…Where are we now?

KEEPER

Let me see…

[The Keeper slides open a window.]

KEEPER

Oh, I actually know this area.  

AMARA, chiming in

For once!

KEEPER

(groaning)  Quiet, you.  We’re in the Monarch’s Spine.

ELLIS

We are…really high up.  And it’s freezing.

KEEPER

That it is.  Brr.  Alright, I’d say warm drinks are in order. I’ve got some coffee stowed around here somewhere. I can get a pot brewing.  How’s that sound?

AMARA

Sounds great, actually.

ELLIS

I don’t want to be a bother, but…do you have any…tea?  I’m not a big coffee drinker–

KEEPER

I think that can be arranged.   No problem at all.

ELLIS

Thanks.

KEEPER

Good!  I’ll get the fire started, then.

[He closes the window, and continues chatting with Ellis as their dialogue fades out.]

KEEPER

Ellis, do you mind getting the matches?  Behind the bar.

ELLIS

Sure, I’ve got them.

KEEPER

Excellent, thank you…

NARRATOR

[EXT. FOREST - NIGHT. Crickets and wind can be heard in the trees.  A large tavern rests across the road, and shadows move around within.]

AMARA

(calling out) Heeey, Keep…where did you want me to put these again?

KEEPER

I told you, don’t call me that. And put the glasses up behind the bar.  Don’t forget to close the cabinet.

AMARA

Sure thing, Keep…er. Have I ever told you how weird it is to have padded slots for each individual cup?

KEEPER

Yes, many times.  By all means–leave them out.  If you like walking on broken glass.  If that happens, you’ll be buying me new ones next time we show up in a town.

AMARA

Fine, fine, I’m doing it–don’t go bald over it.

ELLIS

What about the chairs?  Should I just–

KEEPER

If you can just stack those on the tables, that would be ideal–thank you.

ELLIS

(curious) Sure thing. …So, Mr. Keeper…is all this prep really needed?  Every night?

KEEPER

It is.  Every night.  You get used to it.

[The sound of a clock chiming interrupts them.]

ELLIS

Oh no.

AMARA

GAH!  I thought we still had time–

KEEPER

Well, we obviously don’t!

AMARA, discombobulated

What do I do with the glasses?!

KEEPER

What do you think?!  Leave them!  Get down, both of you! AND HOLD ONTO SOMETHING!

ELLIS / AMARA

AAAAAAAH!

[Sound of glass shattering and bodies throwing themselves flat on the ground.  The clock chimes several times.  On the fourth chime, there is a massive thunderclap, a brilliant flash of light, and the Eagle’s screech echoing somewhere far, far away.  The tavern disappears with a puff of dust.  A crater is all that remains.]
